Fence by Fence is one of our favourite projects
We are very excited about it!
All along the Kororoit Creek one of the most common things you will see, are endless fences. Paling fences, corrugated fences, falling down fences – all variety of fence you can imagine.
We at the Friends of Kororoit Creek think it’s curious that instead of properties being laid out to make the most of the incredible view of nature just metres away, the fences are up to actively block it out.
However, times are changing and residents are starting to realise that the creek is pretty special and that a view is a coveted and valuable thing. Take Caroline Springs for example. There they have built houses that are open to the creek, to celebrate the vista. Very wise from a real estate point of view don’t you think?
What is involved in a Fence by Fence project?
So, here is what the plan is. FoKC have been approaching residents whose properties back onto the creek and offering to plant out along their fence with indigenous plants of their liking. We hope that this will not only make the creek more beautiful by gently disguising the fences but it will also encourage people to make the creek part of their everyday lives, look beyond their gardens and appreciate the natural beauty right on their doorstep. Perhaps some of the residents will one day lower their high fences to make the most of the environmental wealth and real estate goldmine beyond them!
There are far reaching benefits to beautifying the creek
The benefits of this project:
- Added safety. This project, in turn, will help keep the creek safe, with extra attention from all the resident custodians of the creek.
- Discourage graffiti and vandalism – with less fences visible there will be more greenery and less tagging seen along the creek.
- Enhance real estate values with creek vistas.
- We aim to beautify one property every 100 metres initially.
Would you like to offer your fence line to the cause?
All you need to do is help us with the planting and supply the mulch. Easy! We will spray for weeds and provide the plants, some volunteers and the know-how. It is a great opportunity to get your friends and neighbours involved in a worthy local project. Let’s get out there and make a day of it!
Check out our first Fence by Fence project in action!
This is one of our Fence by Fence projects that is looking great. The property owner is very happy with the outcome. Before we planted, this was a bare fenceline with scrappy bits of concrete the only decoration.
Just one month later and our combined efforts have given unlimited potential to what this site will become!
